To stay in Nice in an apartment will probably require you to make some shopping for food items. All the locals shop in small department stores or in grocery shops.
Our advice is to shop in stores like Monoprix, Casino, Marché U, that guaranty good quality items, a large choice and numerous shops. You will always find one of these stores next to your place. Some grocery stores are opened late, until 11 pm. You can find them at each corner. However you will only find basic food items.
You can also find some “traiteurs”; they will provide you with ham and sausages, take away and pastries. They are not cheap, but offer an excellent quality.
Normally, fresh food vendors are all located on the same street within a particular neighborhood. Each different vendor will have a selection of fresh basic products as well as some homemade specialities (“fait maison”). Your local “boulangerie” will have fresh baked bread, pastries and desserts. For dairy products and farm-fresh cheese from every region of France, visit a local “formagerie”. Looking for wine? Go to a “caviste”. A “boucherie” will have freshest cuts of meat and poultry available. Finally, local produce vendors will have fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables year round.
The biggest street market would be the one on the Cours Seleya where you we find flowers, fruits and vegetables.
The streets Paradis, Masséna, Avenue de Verdun and of Suède concentrate an incredible number of famous addresses. On Masséna street: n°13 Lacoste and Petit Bateau. On Paradis street: Armani at n° 1, Montblanc at n°2, Sonia Rykiel at n°3 and Hugo Boss at n°6. On Suède avenue: Louis Vuitton at n°2 ans Swarovski at n°6.
The big avenues concentrate a huge number of cheap brands. On Jean Médecin Avenue, a few steps from Place Masséna, many department stores are settled: Les Galleries Lafayette, Nice Etoile and Nice TNL. Les Galleries Lafayette is an essential stop where one can find, concentrated in only one place, an extremely complete selection of items for man. It holds beginners creations as well as confirmed creators or beauty articles.
Finally, another essential store for all shopping addicts stands in the Old Nice it concentrates a large choice of specifics shops. Many stores offer a choice of clothes and articles especially selected for their gay clients.

Willing to buy a few CD’s or a book? All you need is to find a Fnac or a Virgin Megastore. You will get the best selection of cultural items. The Virgin Megastore has the advantage to be opened until 8.30pm. It has the best choice of CD’s in an exceptional setting. In a distinctelly more anonymous place, FNAC will offer you the biggest choice of books, novels and touritic guides.
A Nice institution: Librairie Massena, 20m from the Place Massena. This bookshop carries a large variety of art and guidebooks, and some novels for the beach. Other bookstore: Privat Sorbonne 37 Rue Hôtel of the Stations 33(0)4 93 13 77 88.
If you wish to visit a flea market and there to make some purchases, there is one great address: The MARKET FLEAS of NICE place Robilante (Port) open of Tuesday to Saturday of 10h to 18h
As a consequence of important films production, Nice concentrates 10 Theatres. If you want to see a movie during your stay, know that a lot of them are in English. If you choose a public progammation, go on the big boulevards like the Pathé Paris or Massena, Jean Médecin Avenue or Variety, boulevard Victor Hugo. You will find great space and confortable conditions. If you prefer European movies of “Arts et Essai”, go to the RIALTO on Rivoli or at THE NEW MERCURY Theatre places Garibaldi. You will be able to see some movies in original version. Don't forget the FILM LIBRARY OF NICE 3, Esplanade Kennedy.
As in all big cities, Nice offers a great choice of opera house, concerts and theatre programmations.
